What is Planning?

Put simply planning permission is granted by your local authority to develop and extend your home, and these days is something that many home extensions, domestic developments and even some loft conversions need.

However, it can also be a maze full of pit-falls and has been likened to a game in which a house-holder can be left baffled and confused.

By understanding this, we can work on your behalf with the local authority planners, not against them, to ensure that during the planning application procedure both the legal requirements and your dreams are fulfilled.

What are Building Regulations?

Sometimes confused with planning applications, building regulations (also known as building control) are the details of how the structure will be built. They tell the builder and the buildings inspector what materials will be used, the method of construction and more.

What’s the difference between a Building Engineer or Architectural Technician and an Architect, an Architectural Technologist or a Surveyor?

This is a question we often get asked. The answer we give is that there are many different types of architects, designers, engineers and surveyors specialising in a wide range of areas within the construction industry, so we cannot give a definition for them.

What we can say is that building engineers and architectural technicians are qualified construction professionals who take projects such as an extension through each stage of the design process and more. Building engineers’ and architectural technicians’ training and strengths are in design (such as aesthetics and appearance), building engineering, construction science and architectural technology.
